Known better as a hideout for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Abacos' Hole in The Wall is about as far south on Great Abaco island (the mainland) as you can go. Watched over by its recently modernized lighthouse, Hole in The Wall is often the temporary home of whale watchers and dolphin researchers.
The road to Hole is definitely not paved with good intentions ... or much of anything else. As a matter of fact (March 1999), if you choose to go straight to Hole without passing Go, you'll find the way is rough and rocky, with an extravagant collection of potholes, ruts and more than a few gullies the size of small canyons.
Going to Hole in your boat is also not a trip for the faint of heart or the novice yachtsman ... and should NEVER be attempted in one of the Abacos many rental boats. Safe anchorages are few and far between, significant seas (sets) can arise for no apparent reason (even if there's not a rage blowing), and shoaling, coral heads and various other potential disasters await the unwary boater.
In other words, don't make the trip to Hole unless you have (a) a 4-wheel drive vehicle in good condition or (b) excellent local knowledge of the waters between Crossing Rocks and Hole or (c) a ride with one of the whale or dolphin research folks.
