SUMMARY OF 2001 REGATTA

JULY 15, 2001 26th

The 26th consecutive Regatta Time in Abaco was held July 4 through 11 and involved five towns as the fleet of sailboats competed. The races are very popular with many sailors as they are competitive yet friendly and casual. The number of boats was up this year with over 70 competing.

Leading off was Green Turtle Cay with a race on American Independence on July 4. This traditional race goes back many more years than 26. A street party with Junkanoo thrilled the participants. The show was impressive. Awards that evening completed the day.

The fleet sailed off Guana Cay on July 6 with great wind. The party that night at Nippers proved to be a huge one with over 600 people attending. The party was an excuse for many Marsh Harbour visitors to spend a night out. However, the wind was light by the Man-O-War race on July 7. The awards ceremony that night was held at Crossing Beach in Marsh Harbour which is always a very popular street party. The weather for the Hope Town Race on July 9 and July 11 changed for the worse. A lightning storm on the 9th delayed the race by several hours. However, before it dissipated, it hit one boat giving the skipper a bad jolt and burning out all his electronics. The weather was not better by the 11th. Many boats were not able to compete because of the severe weather. The final awards ceremony was held at the Jib Room on the night of July 11.

Awards for the racers are bronze sculptures by Pete Johnston of Little Harbour. They are mounted on mahogany plaques. He has been providing the awards for most of the years. This year two of the overall awards were original watercolors of sailing scenes painted by Anne Ray of Lubbers Quarters. Her design also was on the Regatta t-shirts.
