Annual Abaco Rotary Club Horticulture Show An interesting display made up the Annual Rotary Horticulture Show this year. The exhibit was nicely arranged and clearly categorized. Although, there were more vegetables entered than fruits in the Fruit & Vegetable Category, it made for a fine display. A great number of these vegetable entries travelled a very long distance and a short, Sandy Point and Sugar Loaf Cay respectfully. There were five categories for entry: Fruits & Vegetables, Flowers, Plants, Arrangements and Kitchen. Some of the entries in these categories were carambola (also known as starfruit), radishes, string beans, cucumbers, Black sapote (also known as chocolate fruit pudding), rangpur lime, broccoli, tomatoes, okra, kohlarabi, swiss chard, grapefruits (ruby red variety), oranges and large squash among a few others. Interestingly, one of the entries in the kitchen category was what looked like a chocolate cake but turned out to be a cake made from the Black sapote fruit. This has been known to be used in place of chocolate in cakes on occasion when someone cannot consume chocolate because of diabetes or similar dietary restrictions due to health, but enjoys the taste of chocolate. On hand to assist spectators with answers to questions and supervising the whole event was Denise Archer. Although, the annual event was held on Saturday, 20 February the presentations and distribution of certificates will occur at a future Rotary meeting. |
