Subject: Abaco recommendations
My friend and I will be going to the spend 10 days in the Abacos in next month, I would like to know your recommendation in terms of transportation, places to stay, and places to visit. We are looking for a quaint, quiet and peaceful place to spend our vacation. I am particularly interested in the outdoors, snorkeling and just about anything that is adventurous. I have been trying without much success to rent a cottage in lieu of staying in a hotel. Do you have any recommendations?
Look forward to hearing from you.
J
Response:
Thank you very much for your detailed info. You have given me more info than I could possibly imagined.
We will be arriving at Marsh Harbour on 4 8 (too bad we just missed you) and will be staying until 4 17. I have an option to rent a 2 bedroom cottage on Guana Cay for $850 for 10 days since I did not have any other rental contacts up to now.
What do you think of the Guana Cay? Is this centrally located from a public transportation point of view to visit the adjacent islands that you have so beautifully described? Can one rent a boat to go across from Marsh Harbour to the visit the Out Islands? Would you recommend renting a boat for a week instead of taking the ferry? We are flying into Marsh Harbour on 4 8 and arriving at 4:10pm, unfortunately, the last Ferry service stops at 4pm. Are there ferry services from Guana Cay to the Green Turtle Cay and adjacent islands? What do you think of Hope Town and Marsh Harbour, is it worth visiting? If we only have 8 days in the out islands, what are the must see and must do?
I am a stressed out employee at Motorola in Phoenix, AZ and looking for a nice and relaxing place to recoup. I enjoy snorkeling, hiking, good food, interesting sites, meeting local people and enjoying the local culture. I am ready to leave my hair dryer, makeup, and everything relating to city life behind to spend some quality time in the out islands. I plan to spend more time in my bathing suit than my regular clothes when I get there.
I will definitely visit your friends' gallery when I am there, I enjoy arts, culture and music tremendously.
Your idea on having a web page for the Abacos is a great idea. In fact, your friends who managed their property in the Abaco should put up a web page on their rental listings. I found a great shortage of (Abaco) rental listings on the web.

Hi, we are going to Green Turtle Cay in June. Would like to know the best places for snorkeling, beaches and fishing. We will have a boat, and would love to go to some of those deserted islands.
Thanks, H@fulbright.com

We are planning a trip to Abaco the week of 11 17 97. We would like to know if you could tell us from your past experience in Abaco what we could expect weather wise; did you visit Great Guana Cay; our husbands plan to do a lot of fishing and we are looking for a rental (private home or hotel motel) on a beautiful beach -- any particular spots you would recommend over another?
Any information you could toss our way would be appreciated!
Thanks, BC

We are making our first trip to Marsh Harbor, Abaco Islands on 9 20-27, staying at (rental accommodation). We are flying in from Newport News, Va. (we live in Hayes, near Yorktown on the York River, 15-20 min. from N.News Williamsburg Airport). Our retired friends in North Palm Beach, who used to live across the creek from us, will be meeting us in their 29 ft. Blackfin power boat. They've been to Walker's Cay several times (sent us video & pictures), to Lucaya, Grand B.I., & to Marsh Harbor. So they have been instrumental in our planning this trip. They, as well as we, are avid fishermen. They took their boat to Fl. last fall for the winter, loved it & are not coming home. Their house here is on the market. We visited them last of April at Old Port Cove Marina, where they live in a hi-rise overlooking the marina.
My husband's secretary got your name off the "internet", which I don't have access to on my computer. Needless to say, we are concerned about the weather in mid-Sept. Have not been able to find much info on Abacos other than it's a boating paradise with 22 marinas. Did hear that Sept. is "rainy". ANY info that you can share about the area would be appreciated. We have bought plane tickets (non-refundable) & have traded so we're pretty much locked in to going on Sept. 20. Thanks for your help & hope to hear from you soon.
JH
Additional:
Thanks for your prompt reply to my request for info on Marsh Harbour. I will share it with our friends in No. Palm Beach. Where are you located in FL? Yesterday my husband's secretary was able to get several more pages of info on Abacos from the Internet. Yes, if a new website comes on-line after your meeting with MH folks this Fri., please let me know. As I recall, it's been a long time since a hurricane actually "hit" the Bahamas. Virgin & other islands NOT so lucky. We were vacationing on Hilton Head Island, SC in Sept. 89 when Hugo ravaged St. Croix & Thomas. We evacuated Hilton Head at 10 PM Thurs., as Hugo moved up & did his thing in Charleston, Charlotte, etc. So you never know about these storms. You can only make your plans & hope for the best. Thanks again.
Best wishes - JH

We had a great time in the Abacos!!
All was quiet! The weather was good--hot, humid with a great breeze! Our friends came from N. Palm Beach in 29 ft. boat, so we island-hopped to Elbow, Great Guana (went to Nippers for lunch--great place!), Treasure, (nice Marina & enjoyed good food & drinks at the Tipsy Seagull) great beach too! also Man O' War--we were there on Sunday & the place was a ghost town. The "power" was off on for 2 days & nites, but we were lucky & had it at night, so we slept cool. It was windy & we did not get to Green Turtle--next time! We snorkeled Mermaid Reef near Marsh Harbour Marina & had a good lunch at the Jib Room--we were the only ones there! Rented car & drove to Little Harbor & found Pete's Pub & the Johnson Gallery.
What a neat place!! Aubrey fixed us the best hamburgers we'd ever had. A nice change from "conch". Found all residents to be very nice! The coconut & raisin bread from the bakery was wonderful! We stopped on the way to the airport & brought some home! The airport is "unique"--after a 5 minute shower, it's a steamy place--NO AC & don't think I saw a fan. We took US Airways all the way from Newport News Williamsburg, VA. Oh, we also went to Nettie's bonefish camp. 3 people from MD had just come in for a few days. Nettie wanted us to "stay" for supper (wild boar, etc), but we decided not too--pretty pricey. A cup of tea was $3. Our friends from N. Palm have bone fished with a guide from Green Turtle, I think, & caught some nice ones. We've been home a month today. Thanks for your help & info.
Best wishes, J

Hi!
I live in Miami and would like to do some weekend snorkeling in the Bahamas I would like to find a snorkeling locale that I could go over for the weekends and stay and snorkel relatively inexpensively, do you have any recommendations for exceptional coral gardens, I am not into the fishing side of it, just the coral gardens. Would appreciate your feedback
Thanks
