Surf's UP In The Abacos -- Spring Abaco Surf Series Begins
By Christine McCully - The Abaconian 15 April 2002

On April 1st the Bahamas Amateur Surfing Association hosted its first event for the spring series at Guana Cay. The event began at around 2 p.m. near Dolphin Beach Resort at a break known as Willawahs. Conditions showed about three to four foot waves with ideal off shore winds. There was a small crowd due to many of the usual competitors being off Island on Easter holiday.

Nonetheless the contest was scheduled and Mother Nature was cooperating so those who came made history! There was a handful of loyal spectators, the usual parents and beach lovers who make up the cheers of support for the athletes.

There were three divisions:

Grommets (ages 12 and under) 1st Ryan Sands (Guana Cay) 2nd Christian Wilhoyte (Hope Town) 3rd Jacob Albury (Hope Town)

Junior Men's (ages 13 to 18) 1st Blake Sands (Guana Cay) 2nd Joshua Sands (Guana Cay) 3rd A Tie! Andrew Wilhoyte (Hope Town) and Brandon Sands (Guana Cay)

Open division (all over 18) 1st Blake Sands (Guana Cay) 2nd Jeff Gale (Parrot Cay) 3rd Christine McCully (Hope Town) 4th Johnathan Key (Guana Cay).

Handcrafted medals by Alice Bain were awarded to the athletes. A special thanks to our head judges, Tim Albury and Phillip.

Everyone enjoyed the afternoon and the Bahamas Amateur Surfing Association is anxious to plan another event in Guana.
